Marc picked up a guitar while in junior high, and as he got older his interest in music only increased. He started writing songs, and played in a band Doanbrook Hotel. He went to Beachwood High School, and after matriculation he enrolled at Oberlin College. He then started teaching himself to play the piano, and soon transferred from Oberlin College to UCLA. While at UCLA and living in Los Angeles he took the advantage of his talent and used every chance he get by playing in numerous coffeehouses, making a name for himself.

His next career move was demonstrating songs for various writers, such as Jerry Leiber, Jimmy Webb and Mike Stoller. He also then lived in New York, and started taking the role of session musician, which eventually resulted in collaborating with Tracy Chapman to work on her second studio album. Inspired by his talent, Atlanta Records producers signed him to the label, and Marc started working on his own album. His debut self-titled solo album came out in February 1991, and spawned the hit single “Walking in Memphis”. The album became a complete success, reaching No. 38 on the US Billboard 200 chart, while also achieving platinum status, which only increased Marc’s net worth to a large degree, and encouraged him to continue with his career.

Two years later his second album came out, entitled “The Rainy Season”, which featured collaborations with other notable musicians, including David Crosby, Bonnie Raitt and Graham Nash among others. Unfortunately, the album wasn’t as successful as his debut album, as it reached only No. 63 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Following the release, Marc embarked on a tour, and even held concerts in Australia. He returned to the studio in the late ‘90s, and in 1998 released his third album “Burning the Daze”, which continued the decline in his popularity, as the album only peaked at No. 114. After that, Marc decided to take a break from recording his own material, and focused on working with others. In that way, he collaborated with Shawn Colvin, Roseanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Rodney Crowell among many others.

His next release was the live album “Marc Cohn Live 04/05” released in 2005. Several months after the release of the album, Marc suffered an incident; he was on tour with Suzanne Vega in Denver, Colorado and was involved in an attempted carjacking during which he was shot in the head. Fortunately, there were no consequences as the shot missed his eye and brain and lodged in his skull – after eight hours in hospital, Marc was released. However, it did leave some consequences on Marc, as he suffered from post-traumatic stress for quite some time after the incident. Nevertheless, Marc returned to music, and in 2007 released his fourth studio album “Join the Parade”, released through Decca Records. He has released two more albums, ”Listening Booth: 1970” (2010), which comprised songs from that year, and featured guest appearances of such musicians as India.Arie, Jim Lauderdale, Kristina Train and Aimee Mann. Most recently, he released “Careful What You Dream: Lost Songs and Rarities” (2016), which is a collection of songs and demos recorded 25 years ago.

Regarding his personal life, Marc was married and divorced twice; his first wife was Jennifer George with whom he has two children. In 2002 he married Elizabeth Vargas, a television journalist, but the couple divorced in 2016; he also has two children with his second wife.
