Marc`s parents divorced when he was still a child, and he lived with his mother and two siblings in his hometown until he was 13, when the family moved to Liverpool, New York. Marc became interested in hockey and started playing in the Mid State Youth Hockey League, and when he was 15 years old, played for the Syracuse Stars Junior Hockey Team. However, as he got older, Marc focused on football, and with the Liverpool High School team won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association title. Also, Marc started his boxing career the same year, and won four New York State titles. He wanted to become a professional boxer, however, his career was put to an end, after he broke his nose, and he switched to wrestling, and trained with Malenkos.
In 1991 he made his debut appearance in the Floridian Sun Coast Professional Wrestling promotion. After several months as a jobber, he signed a contract with the WCW, thanks to the legendary Dusty Rhodes, and was given the nickname Johnny B. Badd.
