Marco is the son of IndyCar champion Michael Andretti, and the grandson of the famous race driver Mario Andretti. Early in Marco’s career, he joined the 2003 Barber Formula Dodge Eastern Championship, and won eight races in the tournament, going on to become the champion of Barber National and Southern class during the next year. In 2005 he raced in the Star Mazda Series, and would also get six starts in the Indy Pro Series, winning three times. He then moved to the Indy Racing League, making him the youngest driver in series history.
He got his rookie start in the IndyCar series during 2006, but was eliminated through car damage, but this did not stop him, as he would go on to become the Rookie of the Year with a great performance at the Indianapolis 500, finishing second just behind Sam Hornish, Jr. In August 2006, he became the youngest winner of a major open-wheel racing event in the Indy Racing League, but in the following year he did not find the same success, and struggled in a lot of races. In 2011, he won his second IndyCar series race at the Iowa Speedway, his first win in 79 races, but continued to struggle for the rest of the season. In 2013, he bounced back with a third place finish at St. Petersburg, and managed to consistently place in the top five throughout, including in the Indy 500, and then got his first double header at Detroit. He claimed his third pole position in Milwaukee, and then showed top form at Pocono. He eventually finished the season fifth in the points.
Aside from the IndyCar Series, Andretti tried his hand at Formula One and was considered to be a good driver, but he did not want to join Formula One until he had won the Indianapolis 500. In 2008, he also competed in the 12-hour endurance race of the American Le Mans Series. Other races he’s participated include the A1 Grand Prix and the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.
