After completing high school, he enrolled in Sam Houston State University, and later in March 1999 he was enlisted into the United States Navy. He joined the Basic Underwater Demolition/Seal class of 226, but he was injured during the obstacle course and hence couldn’t finish, but he later graduated with the class of 228. He was part of the SEAL team which went to Iraq in 2003 to suppress resistance, and later he was sent to Afghanistan as a member of a four-man team for Operation Redwing. The team was ambushed by locals and everyone in the team was killed except Luttrell, who fell off a mountain and sustained very serious injuries. During the ambush the four men tried unsuccessfully to contact their operational base, and subsequently three of them were killed, and Luttrell had serious injuries which included a broken back, numerous wounds and fractures including from shrapnel. The SEAL team 10 tried to rescue him by bringing in a helicopter which was shot down and the whole team inside it died, but Luttrell was able to evade his pursuers with the help of local villagers, who helped him to reach the nearest US base. After recovering from his injuries, he returned to duty in Iraq with SEAL Team 5.
After returning home in 2007, he co-authored the New York Time’s bestseller “Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of operation Redwing and Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10”; later the book was adapted into a film entitled “Lone Survivor” starring Mark Wahlberg. He co-authored another book released in 2013 entitled “Service: A Navy SEAL at War”. Apart from his books, he has also started a foundation named “Lone Survivor Foundation” with the aim of providing mental and financial support to American soldiers who were somehow effected during their service time, either mentally or physically.
