Guardia was born and raised in San Jose, Costa Rica, and originally came to fame in 1978 when she won the Miss Costa Rica pageant, and was then sent on to represent Costa Rica at the Miss Universe 1978 contest. Although she didn’t place, she was named Miss Photogenic, and also went to the Miss World 1978 contest and placed in the top 15.
