Mark Messier is a retired professional ice hockey player from Canada. He is sometimes referred to by the nicknames “Moose” and “Mess”. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on the 18th of January, 1961. He is widely thought to be one of the sport’s greatest ever players.

Messier played hockey at St. Francis Xavier High School, where his father coached the team. His career began in 1978, when she played in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. He was approached at the age of 17 to play for the Indianapolis Racers for $30,000, but was released from his contract after five games, having failed to impress. In 1979, he moved to the Edmonton Oilers, where he fared better, in 1984 winning the Conn Smythe Trophy for “Most Valuable Player”. Whilst with the Oilers, Messier would win five Stanley Cups, in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990.
In 1991, Messier moved to the New York Rangers, where he would stay for the next six years. In 1997, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks, and returned to Canada. He quickly became captain of the team, taking over from Trevor Linden, but stayed only until the year 2000, when he went back to the Rangers. He announced his retirement on the 12th of September, 2005, having played 25 NHL seasons. The New York Rangers retired his number, 11, in 2006, in his honour. Over the course of his career, he earned 295 playoff points, and played 1756 season games.
During his career, Messier won numerous awards with the NHL, including “All-Star Game” a total of 15 times, “First All-Star Team”, four times, and the “Hart Memorial Trophy” in 1990 and 1992. He was declared the 12th best player of all time in a 1998 issue of “The Hockey News” and was ranked at number four in the book “100 Ranger Greats” in 2009.
Messier has also undertaken some acting work. He appeared in the television mini-series “The Garden’s Defining Moments” in 2015 and 2016, and in various hockey based programmes and made for TV movies, contributing to his overall wealth.
In his personal life, Messier has three children. His eldest son, Lyon, born in 1987, also had a career as a professional hockey player, a defenceman who played for teams including the South Carolina Stingrays and the New Mexico Scorpions. Several of his other family members are also hockey players, including his brother, cousin, brother in law, and father. He is the godfather of legendary hockey star Wayne Gretzky’s daughter. Messier is known for his philanthropic work with several organisations, including extensive work as a board member of The New York Police and Fire Widow’s and Children’s Benefit Fund.
