Initially, he was interested in gymnastics, and he was one of the best athletes in his class, winning the Northern California All-Around Gymnastics Championships, but after a year he transferred Ashland, Oregon, and switched to wrestling. However, he then returned to Palo Alto High, but couldn`t compete very successfully, and finished with 4-6 record.
He continued to wrestle in college, firstly at UCLA, recording 18-8 in his first year, but then he transferred to the University of Oklahoma, where his dominance began. He finished college with three NCAA titles.
