Playing various instruments she was a member of a high school bluegrass quartet, and besides the violin she plays a variety of other string instruments, including the viola, mandolin, double bass and guitar.

The sisters were highly interested in street music, visited many Bluegrass festivals playing together with the siblings Troy and Sharon Gilchrist. From 1984 to 1989, the four students played in a bluegrass band entitled Blue Night Express, while still studying at the private Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. In 1987, Maguire won 2nd place in the annual national competition for violin in Winfield, Kansas. After matriculation from high school, she studied at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, from 1988 to 1989.

The girls became widely known for their joyful nature, musical instrumentation and soaring ballads. They were nominated for Grammy Awards 23 times, 13 of which they won. In 2007, during the ceremony of the 49th Grammy awards, the Dixie Chicks won all five awards for which they were nominated, including the most prestigious: the Best Song of the year, the Best Recording of the year and the Best Album of the year.
