Jay Adams grew up in Venice, California, for the locals known as “Dogtown”, where he developed an interest towards skateboarding at the age of four, to which his stepfather Kent Sherwood introduced, and later was heavily influenced by well-known surfer Larry Bertlemann.

When he was 13, Adams became the youngest member of the Zephyr surf team, a Santa Monica-based crew, and went on to represent Jeff Ho Surfboards and Zephyr Productions. Adams entered the Junior Men’s Freestyle competition in Del Mar, California in 1975 and finished second which increased his popularity among other team members. Thanks to the re-launching of Skateboarder Magazine in 1975, the Z-Boys gained national fame, and by the age of 15, Adams was one of the first to show skills in catching air above the edge of a swimming pool.

The Z-Boys broke-up soon afterwards, but Adams and his stepfather Sherwood established a new team called the EZ-RYDER, then changed its name to Z-Flex after six months with Adams as the team’s brand face. Adams’ skills attracted numerous renowned sponsors, including Osiris Shoes, Hurley, Z-Flex, Tracker Trucks, Nixon, Vercelli Surfboards, Abec 11 wheels, Black Flys, and Carver Racks. The sponsors helped him in his career, as well as increasing his net worth. Adams was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2012.

Regarding his personal life, Jay Adams struggled with drug addiction and spent some time in prison during the ’80s and ’90s, and was even charged with murder in 1982, but only convicted of assault and served six months in jail. Adams went through a rough time in the late ’90’s when his brother was murdered, and mother, father, and grandmother died in the same year. As a result, he became addicted to heroin and spent two-and-a-half years in an Hawaii prison. In 2005, Adams was sentenced to four years after being caught dealing inh crystal methamphetamine and got out in 2008.

Adams was married to Alisha Adams and had a daughter with her, and also had a son with a former girlfriend, Samantha Baglioni. In 2011, Adams married Tracy Adams, and they lived in San Clemente, California.
