Wiki Biography
Marvin Pentz Gay Jr. was born on the 2nd April 1939, in Washington D.C, USA, and died on 1st April 1984. He is known to the world as soul and R&B singer Marvin Gaye. During his career, Marvin released a total of 17 studio albums, some of which include “The Soulful Moods Of Marvin Gaye” (1961), “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” (1968), “What`s Going On” (1971), “Let`s Get It On” (1973), “Midnight Love” (1982) among others.
Have you ever wondered how rich Marvin Gaye was before he died? According to sources, it is estimated that Marvin`s overall net worth was $5 million, an amount earned through his successful career as a singer, however, Marvin also featured in a number of films, such as “The Ballad Of Andy Crocker” (1969) and “Chrome And Hot Leather” (1971), which also increased his net worth.

Marvin grew up in a family of six siblings; his father was a church minister who would often let him sing in the church, accompanying him on piano, and his mother was a housewife. Regarding his education, Marvin attended Cardozo High School, but never graduated, dropping out at 17 to join the US Air Force. However, he soon left the force as he was dissatisfied with his position, doing only menial jobs.
Marvin then embarked on a singing career, rotating through numerous bands, and collaborating with Bo Diddley among others, however with no major success. He then moved to Detroit and soon made contact with Berry Gordy of Motown records, which resulted in a contract signing. In 1961, Marvin released his first album “The Soulful Moods Of Marvin Gaye”. Although the album did not prove to be successful upon its release, he continued with his singing career, but with a change in genre. However, before his next release, in order to pay his expenses Marvin served as a drummer for the group The Miracles.
In 1963, Marvin released his second album “Stubborn Kinda Fellow”, which created his first hit singles “Hitch Hike” and “Wherever I Lay My Hat”. He continued without much success, until in 1967, when Gaye recorded several duet songs with other famous artists on the music scene such as Mary Wells, Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell which increased his net worth and his popularity.
In 1968, Marvin released his first single that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” – since covered by a myriad of artists – and in 1969, his album M.P.G reached number one on Billboard.
Following his first number one hit, Marvin released numerous songs by which he will remain remembered, including “Let`s Get It On”, “Got To Give It Up”, and “Sexual Healing” for which he won two Grammy awards and an American Music Award for the Favorite Soul Single.
In 1982, Marvin released his last album, entitled “Midnight Love”, increasing his net worth with every successful venture.
In 1987, Marvin was posthumously inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Since his teen years, Marvin had not been in a good relationship with his father, in fact, he was thrown out of the family home when Marvin was 17. Their bad relationship peaked in 1984 when the two got into a domestic dispute, which resulted in a shooting and eventual death of Marvin Gaye; he was shot in the chest and shoulder from close range by his father, brought to the California Hospital Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead.
When it comes to his personal life, Marvin had a lot of trouble with the law, precisely with IRS and substance abuse, which resulted in several monetary fines.
To talk about his love life, Marvin was married twice, first to Anna Gordy, from 1964 to 1977, with whom he has one child, and secondly to Janis Hunter, with whom he had a daughter, from 1977 until 1981.

4 | Was slated to record a duet album with Dionne Warwick, but changed his mind. |
5 | Was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1957. |
6 | His father, Marvin Pentz Gay, Sr., died in a nursing home at age 84 on October 10, 1998. Marvin Sr. had pleaded no contest and received five years probation for the murder of Marvin Jr. |
7 | Lobbied Motown Records in 1971 for creative control on albums (as did Stevie Wonder). The first result was "What's Goin' On". |
8 | Was going to do a duet with Barry White but died a week before they began their rehearsal. |
9 | He was named the 19th Greatest Rock 'n' Roll artist of all time by Rolling Stone and the sixth greatest singer of the rock era in a Rolling Stone magazine poll in 2008. He was ranked #31 on VH1's 100 Sexiest Artists. |
10 | The song "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holla)" ends with a prelude to the song "What's Goin' On". This version of the latter-mentioned song is slightly different from the now popular version, in that Gaye begins this with: "Father, Father" and the new version begins with "Mother, Mother". This was due to his burning hatred for his father and eternal love for his mother. |
11 | The song "I Want You" was said to be an ode to his second wife Janis Hunter. According to legend, he wrote and recorded the song in two hours after first setting eyes on her, when she was accompanying her mother (a huge fan) to the studio to watch him work. They married two months later. |
12 | He was so devastated by the 1970 death of singer Tammi Terrell, that he did not record any new material or appear on stage for three years. |
13 | His 1973 hit song "Let's Get It On" was originally written as a political song. |
14 | The addition of the "e" to his name was also emulating one of his favorite singers, Sam Cooke, who did the same thing with his last name. Coincidentally, both performers were shot and killed at young ages. |
15 | Discovered by Harvey Fuqua of The Moonglows. Fuqua took Gaye into the group in 1959 and about a year later brought him to Motown. |
16 | He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He was also awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 1500 Vine Street in Hollywood, California, on September 27, 1990. He was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2014. |
17 | Although there are several versions of the song, Gaye's version of "Abraham, Martin and John" is the only one which has been a chart hit in the UK (a Top 10 single in 1970). Marillion lead singer Steve Hogarth counts Gaye as one of his favorite singers. In 1998, the band covered the song for their live album "Unplugged at the Walls". |
18 | He is mentioned in the lyrics of the songs "True" by Spandau Ballet and "Timeless" by Joey Lawrence. |
19 | Marvin Gaye passed away on the day before his 45th birthday. |

23 | Father, with Jan Gaye, of daughter Nona Gaye. Father, with Denise Gordy, of son Marvin Gaye III. |
24 | Theme song, "Trouble Man" features different vocal takes than the single and album. |
25 | He added the "e" to the end of his name because he thought it looked more professional. |
26 | After a dispute, his father shot him twice in the chest, killing him instantly. |
