Mary attended Thornton Fractional North High School, and after matriculating went to Western Illinois University. After graduating, she attended the Hofstra University School of Law for one year before deciding to drop out.

Matalin’s first campaign was for Dave O’Neal’s bid for the US Senate in 1980. She then started working with the Republican National Committee, for two decades as a Republican strategist. She rose in her status quickly, also increasing her net worth with it. She became the aide to Richard Bond, and would earn national attention when becoming part of the 1988 presidential campaign of George H. W. Bush. After the campaign, she was appointed to the Chief of Staff of Lee Atwater, staying in that capacity for a year. In 1992, she was the deputy campaign manager for Bush’s reelection campaign. The following year, she became a host of the political debate show “Crossfire”, and also maintained her own radio talk show, continuing to appear as a regular radio and television political personality in the next few years.
