Matt Sorum was born into an English-Norwegian family and developed an interest towards drums after seeing Ringo Starr with the Beatles playing on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964. He later played drums in Mission Viejo Marching Bands, and had his first gig with the band called Prophecy in 1975. His trademark outfit of “Union Flag” shorts and nothing else than that has followed him since early in his career, and during many gigs with Prophecy.

The band played from high schools to concerts and all the way to Hollywood, where Stephen Douglas, a local songwriter, offered Sorum an opportunity to join his band, Chateau. Sorum accepted and produced four songs before leaving to play in numerous Hollywood bands including Population Five and performing in bars and nightclubs. In 1988, Tori Amos recruited him to join his newly formed band called Y Kant Tori Read on its debut album. Soon after, Sorum served as The Cult drummer during their live tour in support of Sonic Temple in 1989.

On the live tour with The Cult, Sorum was noticed by none other than Slash from Guns N’ Roses, and only a couple of months later, he was hired as the new Guns’ drummer, replacing Steven Adler in 1990. Sorum took part in three Guns N’ Roses albums – The “Use Your Illusion I” (1990), a Grammy-nominated album that achieved 7x Platinum status and reached the No.2 position on both Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart. Then, they released “Use Your Illusion II” (1991) that topped both Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart, and also achieved 7x Platinum status, which certainly increased Matt`s net worth. In 1993, Sorum participated in his last album with Guns N’ Roses, but “The Spaghetti Incident” wasn’t as successful as its predecessors.

Sorum was fired from the band after an altercation with front man Axl Rose in 1997, but nine years later, they re-established their friendship. In 2002, Sorum joined Slash, Duff McKagan, Dave Kushner, and Scott Weiland in forming the superband called Velvet Revolver; they recorded two studio albums: “Contraband” in 2004 and “Libertad” in 2007, and had massive commercial success, topping the Billboard 200 chart and achieving double platinum status, winning the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in the process. However, their second album “Libertad” failed to repeat their success and they disbanded a year after, in 2008.

Matt Sorum has collaborated with numerous bands and musicians such as Motorhead in 2009 and Hollywood Vampires in 2015, with whom he played most recently during their February 2016 Grammy Award Performance.

Sorum has also released two solo albums: “Hollywood Zen” in 2004 and “Stratosphere” in 2014, but they weren’t as popular as his earlier work.

In 2012, Matt was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.

Regarding his personal life, Matt Sorum married singer Ace Harper in 2013, however there are no further details about their marriage.
