Born Matthew Derrick Williams on the 28th November 1965, in Bishop, California USA, Matt is a former professional baseball player, who played as third baseman in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Francisco Giants (1987–1996), Cleveland Indians (1997), and Arizona Diamondbacks (1998–2003). Williams won the World Series in 2001 and was invited to the All-Star game on five occasions between 1990 and 1999. His career started in 1987 and ended in 2003.

Matt Williams went to Carson High School in Carson City, Nevada and played both baseball and American Football for the Senators. The New York Mets initially selected him, but he never made an appearance for them. Instead, Williams decided to accept a baseball scholarship from the University of Nevada, and deferred his debut into the MLB.

The San Francisco Giants chose Williams as the 3rd pick in the 1986 MLB Draft, and he primarily played as a short stop in his rookie season, but in the next few years Matt would play both third base and short stop. However, his luck changed in 1990 when he became the starting third baseman, and immediately became one of the best players in the league. That season, Williams was the NL RBI leader with 122, won the Silver Slugger Award, and earned his first invitation to the All-Star game. The following year, Matt received his first Golden Glove Award, an achievement that he would repeat in 1993, 1994, and 1997.

In the 2011 season though, he moved to third base coach, then in October 2013, Williams was hired as the new team manager of the Washington Nationals. Matt was excellent in his first season as a manager, winning the National League Manager of the Year award after leading the Nationals to the 2014 National League Division Series, where they lost to the San Francisco Giants, Matt’s former team. Washington was considered as one of the favorites for the World Series in 2015, but they didn’t reach the playoffs and Williams had to go as a result.
