Maya Kasandra Soetoro was born on 15 August 1970, in Jakarta, Indonesia to Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian businessman, and Ann Dunham and is a former high school history teacher, but is best known as the maternal half-sister to former President of the US Barack Obama. Today, she works as a Faculty Specialist and Director of Community Outreach and Global Learning of the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute, located in Hawaii.

As of today, she serves as the Director of Community Outreach and Service Learning at the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace & Conflict Resolution, located in Manoa. Additionally, she is the author of the children’s book entitled ‘‘Ladder to the Moon’’, which was dedicated to her daughter and her mother, and which was published in 2011. Being a part of the faculty staff, Maya is active in researching; the fields that she covers are mostly focused on International and Multicultural Education. In her studies, Maya uses several perspectives and, partnering with Kerrie Urosevich, she holds workshops focused on professional development.
Speaking about her private life, since 2003 she has been married to Konrad Ng, who is of Malaysian-Chinese and Canadian ancestry, and is now a citizen of US, and the couple has two daughters.
