Due to difficulties in providing for Amaro, her parents sent her to the British Virgin Islands where she would live with her grandmother. She started singing at a young age and would even sing around her house using a hairbrush as a microphone. At the age of 11, she was determined to pursue a singing career though never really entered any competitions. Melanie started performing at local events, weddings, and churches. She attended Althea Elmore Stout High School and then moved to Florida, attending Plantation High School.
After matriculating in 2010, she was persuaded by her mother to audition for the first season of “The X Factor USA” the following year. She sang Beyonce Knowles‘ “Listen” and eventually became part of the top 32 finalists. Simon Cowell became her mentor, and she sang Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There” but fell short of the top 16.
