Michelle was the youngest biological child of her parents who, besides her and her two brothers, brought up twelve foster children over a period of twelve years. She was raised Catholic, and attended East Buchanan High School, where during her schooling she acted in several school plays as she exposed an interest in acting from an early age. After finishing high school, she moved to Chicago to enroll at Columbia College where she studied journalism. During her studies, she started modeling throughout the US, as well as Europe and Asia. She also appeared in “Constantine” in 2005, but her role in the film was eventually cut. Her other notable roles include those in “Made of Honor”(2008), “Eagle Eye”(2008), “Trucker” – in which she played alongside Jake Gyllenhaal – and the critically acclaimed HBO series “True Detective”. It was announced in April 2016 that Michelle had joined the cast of “Sidney Hall”, an independent feature film which began filming later the same year and is set to premiere in early2017 at the Sundance Film Festival.
When it comes to her private life, Monaghan has been married to graphic artist Peter White since August 2005, and they have two children; the family currently resides in New York. In 2011, Michelle a mole on her calf removed which had been diagnosed as skin cancer.
