Although born in the USA, Mike spent his early days and childhood abroad as his father was in the US military. He attended the Würzburg American High School in Germany, where he played both football and basketball, and after matriculation he returned to the USA where he enrolled at Mesa Community College, but after two years he became a student at the University of San Diego. While in college he continued with basketball, but didn`t have any major success. He graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration in 1992.
Mike’s first position was as the video intern for the Denver Nuggets of the NBA, and for the next five years he worked as the scout and video co-ordinator. However, in 1997 he became the assistant coach of the Washington Wizards; it was his debut on the bench, and he did a good job, as he was hired by Greg Popovich three years later as his assistant at the San Antonio Spurs. He served in that position for the next three years, increasing his net worth, but also learning about the beautiful game of basketball from one of the best coaches in the NBA; as a part of the Spurs, Mike won the NBA title in 2003.
After the season ended, Mike became assistant coach to Rick Carlisle at the Indiana Pacers, and his net worth significantly increased in the next two years, but in 2005 it received another boost, as he became the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, staying until 2010 and leading the team to the conference semifinals in the 2010 NBA playoffs, however, after a great regular season with 66 wins and only 16 losses, his team lost to the Boston Celtics, and he was subsequently fired.
After Cleveland, he worked for a short time for ESPN as an analyst, but was then hired by the Los Angeles Lakers` officials as the head coach, a successor to the legendary Phil Jackson. However, his time at Lakers was short, as Mike was fired after only one season and a few games into the next one, due to poor results. He then returned to Cleveland, but unfortunately he recorded his worst season as a head coach, winning 33 games and losing 49. As a result, Mike was again fired.
Most recently, Mike was hired as the assistant coach to Steve Kerr at the Golden State Warriors, actually often taking over as Kerr suffered a back injury. Mike subsequently lead the Warriors to the title, ironically against the Cavaliers in the final, and with the best-ever post season record of 16-1.
Regarding his personal life, Mike has been married to Carolyn since 1994, with whom he has two children. Of course they are currently based in California.
