Williams grew up in Jackson, where he attended Murrah High School, establishing an outstanding high school career in basketball. He later enrolled at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, joining the school’s team the Crimson Tide. As a point guard, Williams participated in the NCAA Tournament and was named the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2002, averaging 10.4 points and 4.5 assists per game, but then dropped out to become a professional player.
The following year he entered the 2003 NBA Draft, being selected in the second rounds as the 47th overall pick by the Utah Jazz, signing a one-year, $366,000 deal with the team.
