So, have you ever wondered how rich Morley Safer was? According to authoritative sources, it was estimated that the total size of Morley’s net worth was over $20 million at the time of his death, accumulated through his successful involvement in the entertainment industry. Morley Safer was raised with two siblings in an Austrian Jewish family in his hometown by his mother, Anna and his father Max Safer, who worked as an upholsterer. Upon matriculation, he enrolled at Harbord Collegiate Institute in Toronto, Ontario, and during the same period he also attended the University of Western Ontario; however, he quit to pursue his career as a journalist.

Thus, Morley began his professional career as a newspaper reporter, and worked for a number of newspapers such as the Toronto Telegram, the London Free Press, etc. He also worked for the Oxford Mail in England, after which he returned and started pursuing further his career as a member of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), working in the positions of correspondent and producer. This marked the beginning of an increase of his net worth, as one of his first projects was to produce “CBC News Magazine” in 1956. During the 1960s, he moved to London, where he covered stories about the Algerian War, building the Berlin Wall, and the Vietnam War.

In 1964, Morley was hired by the CBS channel and at the beginning he worked from London, where he was named London Bureau Chief in 1967. Soon, he started to report from other countries, including Nigeria, Israel and China, reaching enormous popularity. When his career as a war correspondent was over, Marley was put in the position of Harry Reasoner on the CBS’ evening news magazine “60 Minutes” in 1970, by its producer Don Hewitt. Thus, he began to report and create the show alongside other journalists such as Bob Simon, Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite, etc. The show added a considerable amount to his net worth, as it became one of the best shows in the history of television. Morley worked on the show until he decided to retire, only a week before his death, when CBS broadcast the documentary about him, entitled “Morley Safer: A Reporter’s Life”.

Thanks to his accomplishments, Morley won a number of prestigious awards, including 12 Emmy Awards, such as the Lifetime Achievement Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1966, three Peabody Awards, three Overseas Press Awards, two Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Awards, among others.

If to talk about his personal life, Morley Safer was married to Jane Fearer (1968-2016), with whom he had a daughter, Sarah Alice Anne Safer, who works as a journalist. He passed away from pneumonia at the age of 84 on the 19th May 2016 in New York City.
