He attended and graduated from Pepperdine University before attending Princeton Theological Seminary to get his Master’s in Divinity during 1959. He then went on to study at the University of Chicago, earning his Ph.D in Psychology in 1967.
While attending the University of Chicago, he worked there as a professor and then became the dean of the Fuller Theological Seminary’s Graduate School of Psychology. He also worked as a private clinical psychologist, which was a two-way street as he learnt as much as he could from the various couples he worked with. He continued in this job for 35 years, and while doing so wrote his findings in various books and publications.

He founded the website “eHarmony” in 2000 along with Greg, and became part of the Board of Directors. “eHarmony” focused on certain categories for compatibility including personality, emotional makeup, skills, character, constitution, family and values. In 2007, he retired from the company, but returned in 2012 to become the CEO because of conflicts in direction. He tried to expand the relationship site to include parenting and employment.
