1(1996, on having her voice dubbed by Glenn Close for Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984)) When I heard the news, I was in my hotel room, alone. At the time of Greystoke, I was not even in a good relationship, so I had no one to share it with. I didn't deceive myself for one minute about what the media was going to do with it or what people in the business were going to think. I said to myself, "Either I jump out that window out of humiliation and embarrassment or I fight." The choice was there: die or fight. It was set up so perfectly for people to think that I had no capabilities, whatsoever. So, I decided to go to class, to evolve. Until Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), I was untouchable. My manager was fighting for me with people who would not even see me. It certainly hasn't been easy, but I'm proud of my achievements.
2(1996, on Marisa Tomei turning down her role in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)) They saw a lot of other people for the role. I was quite impressed that I was the one who was, in fact, doing the movie. Not only did Marisa Tomei lose out as an artist for not taking the opportunity to work with wonderful people on this amazing movie, she lost a lot of money. And the money just keeps coming. See, I didn't get money for it up front, but I had points. I had a huge mortgage and I didn't plan the last baby, but Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) paid for me to sit back and take a year off, pay my mortgage, have plenty of money and even invest some, too.
1First actress in US cinema history to bank back-to-back number one films at the American box office. Her film, Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), went number one on the weekend of April 15-17, 1994, but the following weekend it was knocked from the top spot by Bad Girls (1994) also starring MacDowell.
2She has English, French, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh ancestry.
3Guest speaker at a press conference on the opening night of the inaugural, four-day Asheville Film Festival. [November 2003]
4Attended the Beverly Hills International Film Festival in Beverly Hills, California (2010).
5MacDowell earned the title of #1 female box-office draw (worldwide) with her performances in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) and Bad Girls (1994).
6MacDowell won the LA Film Critics Award for Best Actress, the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989).
7Her Aunt Margaret died in August 2012.
8Her mother and father divorced when she was 6.
9Turned down the Jodie Foster role in The Accused (1988) (and Foster won an Oscar for her portrayal).
10(January 19, 2006) Engaged to Atlanta jewelry businessman Kevin Geagan.
11Parents are Marion St. Pierre MacDowell and Pauline "Paula" Johnston; has a stepbrother and a stepsister.
12(October 7, 2004) She filed for divorce from childhood friend businessman Rhett Hartzog after nearly three years of marriage.
13She was scheduled to receive a Medal of Honor in the Arts at Winthrop University on October 22, 2004. She attended the university for two semesters in the late 1970s, only to have been told that she would not go far in acting.
14In her first film (Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984)), her Southern accent was so heavy that her voice was entirely dubbed by Glenn Close.
15International L'Oreal celebrity spokesperson for over 25 years.
16Has a son, Justin, born in 1986, and two daughters, Rainey Qualley, born in 1989, and Margaret Qualley, in 1995.
17(July 26, 2001) Announced her engagement to Atlanta jewelry businessman (and childhood friend) Rhett Hartzog; they plan to marry in November in Asheville, North Carolina.
18(May 8, 2001) Received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina, for her dedication to the Graham Children's Health Center.
19In 2000, she filed suit against Walmart for displaying her picture in several stores without permission.
