As a child, Omid attended the Italian Catholic school Andisheh Don Bosco in Tehran, which particularly gave priority to language skills education. After his father’s death when he was fourteen, Kordestani moved to San Jose, California, and went on to study electrical engineering at San Jose State University. Upon graduating, he started working as an engineer for Hewlett Packard, however, Omid wanted to expand his knowledge, and decided to enter Stanford Business School to pursue a business degree, gaining his MBA in 1991. He re-started his career by working in product management, marketing and business development at companies such as Go Corporation, 3DO Company and Hewlett-Packard. Eventually, he rose to the position of director of OEM Sales at Netscape and became the Vice-President of Business Development and Sales. During his four-year tenure, he was responsible for establishing customer relationships with big companies such as Amazon, AOL, Intel, Citibank, eBay and such, and significantly influenced Netscape’s remarkable growth.
In May 1999, Kordestani joined Google, where he lead the development and implementation of their initial business model and served as their senior vice-president of worldwide sales and field operations. Omid left Google to become Non-executive Director at Vodafone, where he stayed for a year, then in July 2014, Omid returned to Google to become Chief Business Officer, but left the company in October the same year, to become Executive Chairman at Twitter.
Privately, Kordestani was married to Bita Daryabari from 1991 to 2009. However, Omid reportedly fell in love with a co-worker, Gisel Hiscock, who was at the time working as Google company’s finance director, and the couple moved to London and married in 2011. He is the father of two children.

Additionally, Omid is the co-founder of the philanthropic and entrepreneurial foundation called PARSA, which preserves Persian heritage.
