He earned the title of Most Valuable Player and then moved to Michigan to play in the Midwest Elite Hockey League under the Honeybaked AAA Hockey Club. He was drafted by the London Knights in the 2004 Ontario Hockey League Draft, but opted to play in the United States U-18 National Team Development Program for the 2005-2006 season. He went back to the Knights the following season and led the team to a Western Conference Final against the Plymouth Whalers, losing 4-1 in the best of 7 series. Kane earned the Emms Family Award for the OHL Rookie of the Year.

In 2007, Patrick joined the NHL Entry Draft, and was considered the top prospect in North America by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau.
