Adelstein was born into a Reform Jewish family. He went to the progressive Francis W.Parker School and then enrolled at Bowdoin College to study English language; he was a part of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity and graduated summa cum laude. Upon graduation, Adelstein pursued an acting career, beginning in the theatre while working for New Crime Productions which was founded by John Cusack, and with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. After years of experience in stage acting, Paul made his film debut in ’’The Grifters“ (1990) and went on to appear in several TV series such as ’’Cupid“, ’’Without a Trace“, ’’ER“ and ’’Scrubs“, which brought him notable popularity and made him a familiar television face. He also had several important supporting roles in movies such as ’’Bedazzled“(2000), ’’Intolerable Cruelty“(2003), ’’Memoirs of a Geisha“(2005) and ’’Be Cool“(2005). However, his most notable role came in 2005, when he was cast in the popular TV series ’’Prison Break“, portraying the character of agent Paul Kellerman. He left the show two years later, and joined the cast of the medical drama ’’Private Practice“, in which he starred until the end of the show’s sixth season, considerably boosting his net worth.

When the show ended in 2013, Adelstein could then be seen in ’’Scandal“, followed the next year by starring as Jake Novak in Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce in which his partner was Lisa Edelstein. Some of his more recent activity includes roles in movies ’’The Phenom“ and ’’Mothers and Daughters“ in 2016, and being cast as Raymond Blackstone in the upcoming TV series ’’Chance“ in which he will appear next to Hugh Laurie.
