Paul enrolled at Georgetown University to study Business Administration, and after graduating he attended Georgetown University Law School, and got his Juris Doctor degree in 1974. He first served as a lawyer for the firm Voyrs, Sater, Seymour, and Pease, staying with the firm until 1980. Around this time, he started working as a delegate-hunt coordinator for the President Ford Committee, having also been involved with Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign. He left his law firm when he was nominated to become a part of the Board of Directors of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, continuing his career in politics and so his net worth started to increase. He also started political lobbying, becoming a partner of the firm Black, Manafort & Stone, later amended to Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly (BMSK). During his time there he signed a high valued contract with Jonas Savimbi, who was the leader of the Angolan rebel group UNITA, and also lobbied for Philippine President Ferdinant Marcos and Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, plus for the governments of Kenya, Dominican Republic and Equatorial Guinea. Bush in 1988 and Bob Dole in 1996, after which in 2004 he served as an advisor for the Ukrainian presidential campaign of Viktor Yanukovych, continuing for six years. This began his continued involvement in the sector of Russian politics and business, as Yanukovich was pro-Russian, and now lives in the country.
In 2016, Manafort started working with Donald Trump for his presidential campaign, and was quickly promoted to become his campaign manager. Around this time, he started attracting attention from media and federal agencies due to his connection with Yanukovych, as it was reported that he illegally received money from the former president. Due to the uneasiness he created because of this and other alleged connections with Russia, he eventually resigned as campaign chairman and chief strategist for Trump. In 2017, Manafort surrendered to the FBI after being indicted as a part of Robert Mueller’s investigation into the possible collusion of Russia in the campaign of Trump. He was charged with conspiracy against the US, conspiracy to launder money, and failing to file reports on financial accounts. He has pleaded not guilty and was freed on bail. The following year, he filed a lawsuit to challenge Mueller.
