He originally planned to be a professional American football player, trying out with different colleges, but finally studying at and graduating from the University of Minnesota. He played for the Golden Gophers as a linebacker, becoming part of the All-Big Ten second team from 1983 to 1985. With his outstanding performance in college, he was able to play professionally for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings.
