Upon matriculating, he enrolled in La Salle University in Philadelphia, graduating with a BA in 1857, and attended a Roman Catholic teaching congregation at the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, but left and attended Officer Candidate School, being commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. However, his navy career ended after he suffered a nervous breakdown.

Boyle had worked as a cameraman on the cooking show “Television Kitchen” before he moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. Once in New York, he took acting classes while working as a postal worker, waiter and bouncer. He joined a touring production of Neil Simon’s play “The Odd Couple”, and later Chicago’s “Second City” improvisational comedy troupe, making his Broadway debut with the 1971 “Story Theatre”. Boyle made his film debut in the 1968 “The Virgin President”, and went on to land a starring role as a construction worker in the 1970 film “Joe”, which was his breakthrough role. He was cast in a number of film parts during the 70s, his most notable roles being in the 1972 Robert Redford satirical comedy “The Candidate”, in the 1973 comedy “Slither” and in Mel Brooks’ 1974 horror comedy “Young Frankenstein”. In 1977 he played Senator Joseph McCarthy in the TV film “Tail Gunner Joe” which brought him his first Emmy nomination.

Boyle went on to take numerous roles during the ’80s, such as in the films “Where the Buffalo Roam”, “Outland”, “Yellowbeard”, Johnny Dangerously” and “The Dream Team”. He also starred in the short-lived television series “Joe Bash”. By gaining recognition in the film industry, Boyle’s net worth started to rise significantly.

The ’90s saw the actor taking roles in the films “Solar Crisis”, “The Shadow”, “While You Were Sleeping” and “Dr. DoLittle”. He had a recurring role in the television series “NYPD Blue”, and made a guest appearance in an episode of the series “The X-Files” which brought him an Emmy award.

Boyle’s most famous and most memorable role came when he was cast as Frank Barone in the CBS hit comedy sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond”. Playing the cranky father of the title character, Boyle won rave reviews for his performance, and it brought him seven Emmy nominations as well ing significantly added to his wealth. When speaking about his private life, Boyle was married to journalist Lorraine Alterman from 1977 until his death in 2006 from multiple myeloma and heart disease, being aged 71. They have two daughters.

After his death, his wife established the Peter Boyle Memorial Fund in support of the International Myeloma Foundation, with Boyle’s closest friends, family and co-stars gathering annually for a comedy celebration fundraiser in L.A., which has been considered as the most successful fundraiser in the foundation’s history.
