Phil Spector Wiki Biography

Philip Harvey Spector was born on 26 December 1939, in The Bronx, New York USA of Jewish-Russian ancestry. Phil is a famous record producer and songwriter, perhaps most famous for his collaborations with such artists as “The Crystals”, John Lennon, Dion DiMucci, “The Ronettes”, The Righteous Brothers and many others, during a career in the music industry which began in the 50s.

Phil Spector Net Worth $100 Million

So how rich is Phil Spector? Sources have estimated that Phil’s net worth is $100 million, the main source of his wealth being his career as a record producer, during which he has influenced the music industry a lot and many artists can be thankful to him for their fame and fortune.

Phil Spector’s father committed suicide when he was 10, and the family then moved to Los Angeles. Phil was interested in music from a very young age, learned to play the guitar and participated in a talent show at Fairfax High School. Phil created a band called “The Teddy Bears” with Annette Kleinbard, Marshall Leib and Sandy Nelson. In 1958 the band recorded the song “Don’t You Worry My Little Pet” which helped them to sign a contract with “Era Records”. This was the time when Phil Spector’s net worth began growing. Despite the success the group had, they decided to disband in 1959.

Phil Spector then decided to concentrate on songwriting and becoming a producer. Hits produced by Phil became very popular and his net worth grew accordingly. In 1961 Phil with Lester Sill founded their own record company called “Philles Records”. One of their first projects produced the groups called “The Crystals” and “The Ronettes”, which became very successful. He co-wrote the Ben E. King top 10 hit “Spanish Harlem” with Jerry Leiber, and among other highlights of his 40 year career the 1965 song “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”, produced and co-written by Spector for “The Righteous Brothers”, is listed by BMI as the song with the most US airplay in the 20th century. Phil was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997. What is more, in 2008 he was named as the greatest record producer in music history by “The Washington Times”.

Phil’s plans for the future were shattered when in 2003 actress Lana Clarkson was found dead in his mansion, and in 2009 Phil was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison. A movie about this case was released in 2013 called “Phil Spector”.

While talking about his personal life, Phil was first married to Annette Merar. His second marriage was to Veronica Bennette (1968-74) and they adopted three children. Phil had twins with then-girlfriend Janis Zavala in the 80s. In 2006 Spector married his third wife, Rachelle Short. In the last 10 years, Phil has had health problems, including the onset of Parkinson’s disease, and that now he lost his ability to speak because of throat polyps. It is sad that this talented producer is unlikely to be able to create new hits and add more to the music industry.

#Quote
1[about Elvis Presley] You have no idea how great he is, really you don't. You have no comprehension--it's absolutely impossible. I can't tell you why he's so great, but he is. He's sensational.
2The youth of today are so disappointing. They talk about nothing except themselves
3Love is an obsessive delusion that is cured by marriage.
4[asked if he enjoyed the work of Andrew Lloyd Webber] Why, yes. In fact, I respect his work so much that one day I'd like to set it to music.
#Fact
1Founded, with Lester Sill, Philles Records.
2On February 3, 2003, he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after actress Lana Clarkson was shot to death in his home in Alhambra, California. In April 2007 he went on trial in Los Angeles. On April 13, 2009, he was convicted of second-degree murder. On May 29 he was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison (he will not be eligible for parole until 2028, when he'[ll be 88 years old. If he doesn't get parole then, by California law his sentence will become a life term). He is serving his sentence at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran. He was also ordered to pay $16,800 in funeral expenses and more than $9,700 to a state victim's assistance fund.
3Was of Russian descent and grew up in The Bronx, NY, until age 14, when his family moved to Los Angeles.
4His mother was born in France and he became fluent in the language by eighteen years of age.
5Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997.
6It is not generally known, but Phil Spector had a brief association with Atlantic Records in the early 1960s where he produced, among others, three of R & B's greatest divas, Ruth Brown, La Vern Baker and Broadway star Jean DuShon. Miss DuShon was brought to Atlantic by the late Ahmet Ertegun, who had seen her performing at the Roundtable. He paired her with Spector and they recorded "Talk to Me" backed with DuShon-penned, "Tired of Trying".
7One night at his home, he held the punk band, Ramones, at gunpoint and he forced the band to perform.
8Dan Kessel and David Kessel, Spector's production coordinators and musicians/vocalists in his infamous Wrecking Crew since 1974, are stepsons of legendary actor Mickey Rooney.
9Is portrayed by Rob LaBelle in What's Love Got to Do with It (1993)
10Is mentioned in the song, "Life Is a Rock But the Radio Rolled Me", by Reunion.
11He was voted the 63rd Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Artist of all time by Rolling Stone.
12As a young man, he claimed that he trained himself to sleep only 2-3 hours a night.
13Produced records for Gene Pitney, Ike Turner and Tina Turner, Ben E. King, The Beatles, The Righteous Brothers, The Checkmates, The Crystals, The Ronettes, Ramones and Yoko Ono, among others.
14Children: Gary, Louis, Donte, Nicole Spector and Phillip.
15His father committed suicide when Phil was only 9 years old. On his tombstone were the words: To Know Him Is To Love Him, which Phil eventually used as the title of one of his most famous songs.
16Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise have discussed working on a biopic about the producer.
17First met The Beatles in early 1964, on the airplane carrying them to New York for their first American visit; by late 1969, he'd long been interested in producing them. Allen Klein brought Spector to England, where he hit it off well with John Lennon and George Harrison. After helping produce Lennon's solo single "Instant Karma!" (written and recorded all in one day, and a #3 hit in the US), Spector was given the tapes of the ill-fated "Get Back" project, which nobody involved wanted to touch, as a "band audition". While "Let It Be" was a successful and reasonably consistent album, his changes to the group's sound drew considerable fire from the critics, and particularly from Paul McCartney, who was furious about the overdubs made to "The Long and Winding Road". Nevertheless, both Lennon and Harrison continued to work with Spector on solo projects, and Spector later co-produced Yoko Ono's album "Season of Glass", in the months after Lennon's death.
18Elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 (under the category Non-Performer).
19Kept a bodyguard/driver since his late teens, after he was attacked in a men's-room prank that got out of hand.
20While producing Ike Turner and Tina Turner in the mid-1960s, Spector actually worked only with Tina; Ike was reportedly paid $10,000 not to attend the sessions.
21Gave Cher her first recording experience at 16, after Sonny Bono proposed his "girlfriend" as a session singer.
22Spector and Brian Wilson collaborated on one backing track for a single, which was never completed; the music bed they recorded was used later for a public-service announcement featuring Jay and the Americans.
23His studio band was affectionately known as the Wrecking Crew; session regulars included Hal Blaine, Glen Campbell, Al De Lory, Jim Gordon, Jim Horn, Carol Kaye, Leon Russell, Tommy Tedesco, Nino Tempo, and Sonny Bono, himself learning the producer's trade, as Spector had learned from Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Brian Wilson sometimes "borrowed" Wrecking Crew members for his own recordings with The Beach Boys.
24The character of Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) is based loosely on stories about Spector.
25Spector served an "apprenticeship" under Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in New York, learning from them while they were producing The Drifters; Spector plays the guitar solo at the end of "On Broadway".
