He started playing football in the positions of a running back and defensive back while he attended Lehigh Senior High School in Lehigh Acres, Florida. Besides football, he was also a member of the track and field team for three seasons, an set personal records of 10.5 seconds in the 100m, and 21.8 seconds in the 200m sprints. Phillip recorded 6.79 seconds for the 60m at the Meyo Invitational, in which he participated, after joining the Hurricanes track team in 2001.
