Born William Ray Guy in the 22nd December 1949, in Swainsboro, Georgia USA, Ray is a retired American Football player who spent his entire career playing for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders, from 1973 to 1986, and with whom he won three Super Bowl rings. He played in punter position, and was selected for seven Pro Bowl games, while he was named to the First-team All-Pro six times.

Ray was born in Swainsboro and went to Thomson High School in Thomson, Georgia. After matriculation he enrolled at Southern Mississippi where he started playing football. During his college career, he was rather successful, earning a unanimous All-American selection in 1972, and setting several records including the 61-yard field goal in a snowstorm during a game in Utah.
After his senior year, Ray declared for the 1973 NFL Draft and became the first punter to be drafted in the first round, as he was selected by the Oakland Riders as the 23rd pick. He remained a Raider his whole career, playing in 207 games, making 1,049 punts for 44,493 yards with the longest punt being 77 yards. Thanks to his great plays Ray signed several lucrative contracts over the course of his career, which increased his wealth to a large degree.
