Richard grew up in Bayside, Queens, before the family moved to Los Angeles when he was nine years old. He went to Beverly Hills High School, where as a teenager, he acted in community plays. For a short time, Richard attended San Fernando Valley State College – now known as California State University, Norhridge – but he was expelled for continuously arguing with a teacher. He spent two years in an alternate term of service as a hospital clerk, for being an objector against the Vietnam War.
