To begin with, Rick grew up in Missouri. His father was a truck driver and his mother worked as a saleswoman in a shop. After high school he served in the USA Navy for two and a half years, most of the time as a radar operator on board the USS Glover. Then, using the privileges for former military personnel, with the financial support he enrolled at the University of Missouri, firstly graduating with a BA degree in Management from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and later a Master’s degree in Law from Southern Methodist University.

Concerning his career as a businessman, he became the owner of two shops in Kansas City while still studying at the university. After graduation, Scott took to legal practice at the law firm Johnson & Swanson in Dallas. In 1987, he was co-founder of the company Columbia Hospital Corporation; in 1989, the company merged with the Hospital Corporation of America with health care company Columbia / HCA , which became the largest for-profit health care company in the USA. In 1997, he was forced to resign from the board of the company, when there was a scandal about their business practices and accounting procedures. Recently, the company admitted to having committed fourteen crimes, and agreed to pay more than $1.7 billion to the US federal government.

Later, Scott devoted himself to the venture capital industry. He continued investing in the medical sector, being an important shareholder of hospitals’ network Solantic and pharmacies Pharmac. For a time he was also a co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, for which his business partner was the later President George W. Bush.

Talking about his political career, his first major project was the organization of Conservatives for Patients’ Rights, which opposed plans for health reform put forward by the administration of President Barack Obama; Scott gave $5 million of his personal wealth to co-finance a media campaign conducted by the organization. In 2010, he ran successfully for governor of Florida in the colors of the Republican Party, being victorious over his main rival state attorney general Bill McCollum. On the other hand, he faced Democrat Alex Sink, serving then the state government as Chief Financial Officer; Scott garnered 48.87% of the votes and Sink 47.72%. On the 4th January, 2011 he was sworn in as the 45th governor of Florida. Scott spent $75 million on his campaign from the assets of his own. On the 4th November, 2014, he secured re-election as governor of Florida, beating the Democratic candidate Charlie Crista.
