He also became known as an intelligent fighter, and for his wide range of attacks, especially his powerful low kicks and tight defense.

He started competing at the age of 16, but was forced to face adult competitors as he was too big for his age category.

In 2012 Verhoeven started his professional career, signing with Glory promotions in October of that year, firstly competing against Sergei Kharitonov and winning via unanimous decision at Glory 4: Tokyo, but lost to his second match against Semmy Schilt.
