Born in Temple, Texas, Torn is the son of Elmore Rual Torn Sr., who worked as an agriculturalist and economist, and Thelma Mary Spacek, a homemaker. Growing up on a farm, he decided to study animal husbandry at the Texas A&M University and later on graduating from the University of Texas.
With his dreams of having his own ranch, Torn decided to act a little in Hollywood to become a movie star and save up to by his own property.
