Robert Blake began his career as an actor when he was six years old and starred in a comedy film “Bridal Suite”. He became a successful child actor and starred in comedy short films entitled “Our Gang” (between 1939 and 1944) when he also acquired his stage name – Robert Blake. For his performance in these series, Blake was rewarded with “Former Child Star “Lifetime Achievement” Award” in 1995. Another important role in Blake’s career was in the western TV series “Red Ryder” between 1944 and 1947. He also appeared in the Film-Noir feature film “Humoresque” in 1946, the adventure drama film “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” in 1948 and the Technicolor film “The Black Rose” in 1950.
After graduating from high school, Blake took a short break from acting and returned to the screens in the 60’s, appearing in more significant roles than before. He starred in the drama film “Town Without Pity” in 1961, the Technicolor film “Ensign Pulver” in 1964 and the epic film “The Greatest Story Ever Told”. In 1965, Robert Blake played the part of killer Perry Smith in the Academy Award-winning thriller “In Cold Blood”, which was one of the most successful roles in Blake’s acting career and greatly raised his net worth.
Robert Blake’s only role that was more successful was in the detective TV series “Baretta” in which Blake played the main role of Anthony Baretta for three years (between 1975 and 1978). Blake won his first Emmy award for this television role and it was the very peak of his career. In 1999, Blake started to date his soon-to-be wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley and it became the end of his professional acting career, as Bonnie was killed in 2001 and over which Blake became the main suspect of the horrible crime. The years that followed consisted of Blake’s arrest, charges which were denied, and a trial which finally ended in Blake being released and pronounced not guilty after paying a massive bail, and which caused his net worth to drop to negative numbers.
In his personal life, Robert Blake was married twice, firstly to Sondra Kerr(1961-83), with whom he has two children, and secondly to Bonnie Lee Bakley in 2000, when it became clear that Blake was the father of their daughter; they divorced in 2001.
