Robert is the son of Granville Martin Pine, who worked as a patent attorney, and his wife Virginia, and has German and English roots. Before he ventured into acting, Robert studied pre-med at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Robert’s career started in 1964 with the minor role of Denny Wentworth in the TV series “Kraft Suspense Theatre”, and then appeared in several roles in the TV series “Broadside” (1964-1965).

He started building a name for himself with roles in such TV series as “Convoy” (1965), and “Run for Your Life” (1966), and in 1966 he made his film debut with the role of Mitchell in the western “Gunpoint”, and continued with film roles in “Munster, Go Home!” (1966), and “Out of Sight” (1966). Two years later he featured in the western “Journey to Shiloh”, starring James Caan, Michael Sarrazin and Brenda Scott, and until the mid- ’70s appeared in numerous TV series and then in 1974 portrayed John McCarten in the drama “The Bears and I” (1974), while in 1975 he appeared in the Academy Award nominated drama “The Days of the Locust”, starring Donald Sutherland, Karen Black and Burgess Meredith. His net worth was rising steadily.

Robert was then selected for the role of Sgt. Joseph Getraer in the TV drama mystery series “CHiPs” (1977-1983), next to Erik Estrada, and Larry Wilcox – he appeared in every episode of the Golden Globe Award- winning show, which increased his net worth to a large degree and improved his popularity. Two years after the show ended, Robert starred in the drama “Papa Was a Preacher”, while from 1983 to 1988 he featured in several episodes of the TV crime drama series “Magnum P.I.”, as Lieutenant Thomas Sullivan Magnum II. Also, in 1986 he recorded his first appearance in the TV series, “Murder, She Wrote”, and until 1996 made several other appearances in the series, which also added to his wealth. In 1988 he was selected for the role of Stephen Logan in the soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” and appeared in over 30 episodes of the show until 2001, which further increased his wealth to a large degree.

Robert didn’t have another notable role until 1996 when he featured in the Academy Award- winning sci-fi adventure “Independence Day”, starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum. Five years later, Robert portrayed Mayor Artie Worth in 13 episodes of the TV action drama series “Black Scorpion”, while in 2005 he appeared in the mystery thriller “Red Eye”, starring Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, and Brian Cox.

Robert continued with his career, going into the sixth decade, however, he landed only minor roles in TV series when in 2007 he portrayed Dr. Micah Jackson in the film “Love’s Unfolding Dream”, and Captain Wentworth in the crime drama “Lakeview Terrace”. Two years later, he starred in the drama “Reunited”, while in 2013 appeared in the drama “Decoding Annie Parker”, while from 2014 to 2015 he portrayed Buddy in the TV series “Finding Carter”. In recent years, Robert has appeared in the film “Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse”, while at the moment he is working on several films, including “Minkow” (2017), “The Last Full Measure” (2018), and “Con Man” (2018).

Also, Robert has tried himself as a voice actor and so far has lent his voice to Master Orgus Din in the video games “Star Wars: The Old Republic” in 2011, and “Star Wars: The Old Republic – Shadow of Revan”, while in 2013 he gave his voice to Bishop from the animated film “Frozen” (2013).

Regarding his personal life, Robert has been married to actress Gwynne Gilford since 1969; the couple has two children together, one of whom is actor Chris Pine.
