Roger was raised by his single mother, Eloise Harris in Watts; the two lived in the Imperial Courts public housing projects.

Roger’s career began in 1971, with several short roles in such TV series as “Longstreet”, “Cannon”, and “Night Gallery” (1971-1972). The following year he made his film debut in Richard Fleischer’s action drama “The New Centurions”.

In 1973 he featured in the thriller “Terminal Island”, starring Don Marshall and Phyllis Davis, while three years later he portrayed Newton in Bob Rafelson’s Golden Globe Award-winning film “Stay Hungry”, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jeff Bridges in the lead roles. He first came to prominence with a supporting role in Michael Mann’s made for television sports drama “The Jericho Mile” (1979), which won three Primetime Emmy Awards, and featured Peter Strauss and Richard Lawson as stars of the film. After this success, Roger’s name became well-known in the Hollywood area, and soon he was brought into the cast of the TV series “Magnum P.I.”, starring his longtime friend Tom Selleck. From 1980 until 1988, Roger portrayed helicopter pilot Theodore ‘TC’ Calvin, the role that marked his entire career. Also, it certainly increased his net worth to a large degree.

After the show ended it became rather easy for Roger to acquire new prominent roles, such is Officer Roy Cole in the thriller “Unlawful Entry” (1992), directed by Jonathan Kaplan and starring Ray Liotta, Kurt Russell and Madeleine Stowe. In 1998 he appeared in the mystery drama “Letters from a Killer”, starring Patrick Swayze and Kim Myers, while from 1999 until 2000 he portrayed Milton ‘Milt’ Johnson in the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated comedy series “Rude Awakening”, which also improved his wealth.

From the start of the new millennium, Roger’s interest in acting began slowly to fade, and he landed only a couple of brief appearances in such TV series as “Arli$$” (2001), “The District” (2003), “Las Vegas” (2007), and the recurring role of Grandpa Faison in “FCU: Fast Checkers Unit” (2010), but they maintained his net worth.

Roger is also the founder of the Watts Repertory Company, which has operated successfully since 1974.

Regarding his personal life, Roger has three children; two with his ex-wife Saundra Locke. The couple married in 1960 but later divorced. Since 1976 he has lived with Toni Laudermick, and they have a daughter together.

He is a licensed helicopter pilot in real life, and enjoys playing golf. He is good friend with O. J. Simpson thanks to that particular hobby.
