Of Scottish, Irish, and Norwegian ancestry, Rory began to take fighting seriously in his teens, when he joined to train with David Lea at Lea’s fight team Toshido Fighting Arts Academy, found just out of Kelowna, British Columbia.
Rory improved steadily, and made his debut in 2005, when he was only 16 years old, defeating Terry Thiara in a successful start to his professional career; the match was a part of the Extreme Fighting Challenge 4. After that, Rory debuted in the King of the Cage promotion, and in his second professional fight defeated Ken Tran. However, his next match was a loss, as Carlos Condit defeated Rory at the UFC 115, which was regarded as a Fight of the Night. However, he bounced back in no time, defeating Nate Diaz by a unanimous decision, dominating Diaz all three rounds. Rory continued to string up victory after victory, reaching a 15-1 record, before losing his second match, this time to Robbie Lawler by split decision. However, he lost again to Lawler, this time at the UFC 189 in a match for the UFC Welterweight Championship. The fight became a fan classic and due to overall performance by both fighters, received the Fight of the Year honors, while both of them got their Fight of the Night bonuses. He participated in one more fight in the UFC promotion, recording his fourth loss, and first to Stephen Thompson.
In August 2016, Rory signed a contract with the Bellator MMA and made his debut in 2017 at the Bellator 179 against Paul Daley – Rory won by submission, further increasing his wealth.
