Rudy attended the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School and then went to Manhattan College to study theology for four years. After graduation, and contemplating a life in the priesthood, he would eventually attend New York University Law School in Manhattan, finishing as a magna cum laude in 1968. He started his law career under Judge Lloyd MacMahon who was United States Southern District Judge for New York at the time. He went on to join the office of the US Attorney and by the age of 29, had become the Chief of the Narcotics Unit as well as executive US attorney. By 1975, he was called to serve in Washington D.C. working as Associate Deputy Attorney General. He returned to New York in 1977 to practice law under Patterson, Belknap, Webb and Tyler.
