Newman attended South Bend La-Salle High School, and after his matriculation in 1996, he enrolled in Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, graduating in 2001 with a Bsc degree in vehicle structural engineering.

Newman started driving while still a small child, driving in his first quarter-midget race at the age of five, going on to capture over 100 victories, six regional and one national championship over the following seasons. After switching to full-sized midgets in the All-American Midget Series when he was 17, Newman earned the Rookie of the Year award and became a champion midget racer. His success earned him induction into the Quarter Midget Hall of Fame.

He began racing USAC sprint cars in 1995, eventually winning the USAC Silver Bullet Series title, the first driver to win all three midget, sprint and Silver Bullet.USAC divisions. In 2000 he made his NASCAR debut, driving for the famed Roger Penske’s team, quickly learning his way from open wheel racing to stock car racing. Driving in five ARCA stock car races that year, Newman won three of them. Shortly after, he began competing in ARCA, XFINITY and Sprint Cup Series events, scoring wins in all three series. His net worth started to rise.

In 2002 Newman captured his first Cup victory from pole at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, while also setting a rookie record for most top-10 finishes (22) and pole awards (six) in a season. He became the second rookie to score a NASCAR Sprint All-Star win at Charlotte, earning Rookie of the Year honors. The following year saw Newman leading the series in poles positions and winning eight races, earning several awards and getting the nickname ‘Rocket Man’. He continued to lead the series in most poles in 2004, and captured two more wins, earning a berth in NASCAR’s inaugural Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. He also won six of the nine races in the XFINITY Series. He made the Chase again in 2005. All added to his wealth.

Newman failed to score wins in the following two seasons, however, in 2008 he captured national attention by winning the Daytona 500, the sports’ most prestigious event.

The following year he joined Stewart-Haas Racing, earning his third berth in the Chase in 2009 and scoring a win at Phoenix International Raceway in 2010. He made the Chase again in 2011 and captured another win at Martinsville Speedway in 2012. His victory in the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway earned him his fifth Chase appearance. His net worth was rising.

Although Newman made it to the Chase, he was eliminated in the second round.

Newman also raced in the Nationwide Series in 2001, and Truck Series in 2008, being the fourth driver to win in their first Truck race.
