Saigon grew up in New York, and had a quite turbulent childhood that eventually led to his violent behavior and spending some time in jail for first-degree assault after shooting at someone in a bar in the early ‘90s. While in prison, Saigon met fellow inmate Hakim who taught him rapping, and supplemented his vocabulary. The rap battles helped Saigon to express himself, and look for redemption through the music. He took the name “Saigon” while serving time, after reading Wallace Terry’s book about the Vietnam War. Saigon was released in 2000 and soon after he started making mixtapes, with the goal of securing a professional deal with a record company.

In 2003, Saigon released his debut mixtape entitled “Da Yard Father 1”, and soon after he recorded the sequel “Da Yard Father 2”. He signed a contract with Atlantic Records in 2004, but demanded to be released after only a year because of the record company stalling the release of his debut studio album. Saigon recorded seven more mixtapes before he signed a contract with the independent label called Amalgam Digital in 2007, which launched two of his mixtapes: “The Moral of the Story” (2007) and “All In A Day’s Work” (2009). Finally, in 2011 Saigon’s debut album “The Greatest Story Never Told” came out under the Suburban Noize Records label. The album was produced by Just Blaze and had notable guest contributions from fellow rap artists such as Q-Tip, Jay-Z, Swizz Beatz, Faith Evans, Devin the Dude, Layzie Bone, and Bun B. It reached No.7 on the US Billboard Rap Albums, No. 9 on US Billboard Independent Albums, No. 15 on the US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and No. 61 on US Billboard 200, and its sales significantly increased his net worth.

In 2012, Saigon’s second studio album “The Greatest Story Never Told Chapter 2: Bread and Circuses” was released, and it peaked at the No. 19 on US Billboard Rap Albums, No. 25 on US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and No. 151 on US Billboard 200. Most recently, he recorded another album “G.S.N.T. 3: The Troubled Times of Brian Carenard” in 2014, but it failed to achieve commercial success.

Aside from music, from 2005 to 2006 Saigon appeared in four episodes of “Entourage”, while in 2015 he also played in the movie of the same name.

Regarding his personal life, Saigon has a daughter named Rayne Dior Carenard, born in 2008, and also has a son with Erica Jean. In January 2006, Saigon was stabbed in the temple outside a diner in Manhattan, when a man tried to steal his chain from his neck, and fight ensued. In September 2007, Saigon and Prodigy of Mobb Deep had an altercation in a local club, but the feud is over now.
