However, he stayed only two years in Wilmington, as he transferred to the Clarion University of Pennsylvania, continuing his basketball career, and led his team in most assists made per game. He received his BA degree in marketing in 1982.

John`s professional career started soon after his college graduation; he was engaged as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas, staying there for three years, from 1982 until 1985. His next stop was the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as an assistant coach to Paul Evans. These positions began his net worth, however, John was slowly building his career, and in 1988 earned his first job as a head coach, when he was hired by the University of Massachusetts. He stayed there until 1996, and during his reign, Massachusetts recorded its best results in the team’s history; he led the team to five consecutive Atlantic 10 titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. Thanks to these accomplishments, John increased his net worth by expanding his contract, and he also won several awards during his tenure at the Massachusetts, including Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 1992, 1993, and 1996. John then returned to college basketball, becoming the head coach of the team of the University of Memphis. John returned to his glory days, and was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2006, 2008, and 2009. In 2008, he received his second Naismith College Coach of the Year award.

In 2009, John took over the basketball team of the University of Kentucky, signing an eight-year contract worth $34.65 million, a very significant contribution to his net worth. In his first year as a head coach, Kentucky finished first in its conference, and reached NCAA Elite Eight stage, but lost to West Virginia. Nevertheless, two seasons later, John won his first and only NCAA title so far, defeating Kansas.
