Scott Raymond Adams was born to Virginia and Paul Adams and is of half-German descent. Scott loved the “Peanuts” comics when he was a child, and started drawing at the age of six, winning his first competition at the age of eleven. Adams was rejected from art school in 1968 and opted to study law at the Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School, form where he graduated in 1975. In 1979, Adams received his Bachelor degree in Economics at Hartwick College, and then moved to California, and in 1986, he received his MBA in economics and management from the University of California, Berkeley.

He learned his trade with telecommunications engineers in Crocker National Bank in San Francisco from 1979 to 1986, during which Adams’ positions moved from management trainee, to computer programmer, then budget analyst, followed by commercial lender, product manager, and ultimately supervisor. When working as a bank teller, Adams was held at gunpoint twice in only four months.

Adams created Dilbert, based on his ex-boss Mike Goodwin while working at Crocker National Bank, and Dogbert, who was first called Dildog, was based on his family’s deceased beagle Lucy. He subsequently moved to Pacific Bell in 1986 and stayed there until 1995. In the meantime, Adams finally published Dilbert with United Media in 1989, receiving a first paycheck of $368.62 for the cartoon. Dilbert became more popular throughout the years; it had 100 newspaper publications in 1991, rising to 400 in 1993, benefiting Scott’s net worth considerably.

Adams left his job and became a full-time cartoonist in 1996, with Dilbert being published in 800 newspaper, and in the same year Adams’ first book “The Dilbert Principle” was released. In 1997, Adams won the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year and also Best Newspaper Comic Strip of 1997, and he became a famous cartoonist.
