Being interested in music from an early age, Shane dreamed of pursuing his career in that field. Following his desire to become a singer, he started performing when he was 12 years old, and subsequently joined the reality TV show ‘’Star Search’’, performing Dan Hill’s ‘’Sometimes When We Touch’’ for his competition debut. Shane moved to Branson, Missouri when he was 15, and when it comes to his education, Shane graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, followed by a move to Nashville, the core of country music.

He worked on his debut song ‘’Just One Touch’’ with music producer Rich Herring and signed a contract with the Curb Records afterwards. His first song for the previously mentioned record label was ‘’Say Anything’’, released in 1999, which peaked at 41st place on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs. In the following period, he released ‘’Are Your Eyes Still Blue’’, which did relatively better on the charts, and helped his net worth to rise.

In 2001, he moved to Los Angeles and subsequently wrote songs for ‘’Shelter’’. In 2007, he returned to Nashville as he decided to continue his songwriting career, collaborating with Lee Ann Womack. In 2009, he wrote ‘’What Country Is’’ for Luke Bryan’s album ‘’Doin’ My Thing’’, and in 2010, Shane wrote three songs for Reba McEntire. More importantly, the song ‘’Somewhere With You’’ which he wrote for Kenny Chesney peaked at number one on the Hot Country Songs chart, being his first song to achieve that position. In 2011, his paths crossed with Luke Bryan once again – the duo wrote ‘’Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye’’ alongside Jeff Stevens, and during the same year, he collaborated with Miranda Lambert, co-writing ‘’Mama’s Broken Heart’’ for her album ‘’Four The Record’’, and besides that, McAnally worked with artists such as Jake Owen and Uncle Kracker. As of 2012, he wrote ‘’Go Time’’ and ‘’Fill in the Blank’’ for Greg Bates’ self-titled album, and the following year joined Kelly Clarkson’s creative team which resulted in the songs ‘’Tie It Up’’ and ‘’Wrapped in Red’’. In 2014, he wrote ‘’Freestyle’’ and ‘’Just a Girl’’, songs that later on appeared on Lady Antebellum’s album ‘’747’’, then collaborated with Miranda Lambert once more, writing her duet with Little Big Town, which was released in June 2015, and featured on Miranda’s fifth studio album, ‘’Platinum’’. During the same year he co-wrote ‘’Keep Us Safe’’ for American country singer Carrie Underwood, then two songs for ‘’Tangled Up’’, an album by Thomas Rhett. ‘’T-Shirt’’, one of those two, received a positive response from critics, entering the Hot Country Songs chart in 39th place. As of the same year, Shane’s talent earned him a Grammy nomination, and two more in 2016, for albums ‘’Pageant Material’’ and ‘’Montevallo’’.

Shane’s latest projects include seven songs he wrote for Midland’s album ‘’On the Rocks’’, and two songs for Walker Hayes. McAnally has been nominated for three Academy of Country Music Awards in 2017.

In his private life, Shane is openly gay, and has been married to Michael Baum since September 2012, after dating for six years.
