Shawn is of Irish and Hungarian ancestry, and grew up in the Loch Haven neighborhood of Ijamsville, Maryland. He went to New Market Middle School and then Linganore High School.

As early as ten years of age, Shawn made his acting debut, firstly in local theater in Maryland and then on TV. As he got older, his interest in acting increased, and in 1995 he got his first on-screen role; the minor role of Lyle Warner in the TV crime-drama series “Homicide: Life on the Street”. The same year, he appeared in several other films, including Jodie Foster’s romantic comedy “Home for Holidays”, and Peter Werner’s “Inflammable”. His net worth was established.

He made his breakthrough in 1998, in the role as Stan Rosado in the sci-fi horror “The Faculty”, starring Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall and Laura Harris. The following year, he featured next to Kris Kristofferson and Martin Landau in the drama “The Joyriders”, and also shared the screen with Sharon Stone, Jeff Bridges and Nick Nolte in the crime drama “Simpatico”.

Little by little, Shawn’s name was becoming more known in Hollywood, which resulted in more prominent roles with the dawn of the new century. Hence, he featured in the romantic comedy “Down to You” (2000) as Eddie Hicks, then had the lead role in the romantic drama “Borstal Boy” (2000), while the following year, he starred in the thriller “Tangled”, with Rachel Leigh Cook, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Two years later, Shawn portrayed Duffy in Greg Marcks’ crime-drama “11:14”, and in 2005 had the lead role in the Primetime Emmy Award- nominated war drama about John McCain, entitled “Faith of My Fathers”, which only increased his net worth to a large degree.

Shawn continued with lead roles in the film “Familiar Strangers” (2008), while in 2009 he was chosen for the role of Detective Sammy Bryant in the TV crime-drama series “The Southland” (2009-2013), which further added to his wealth. While the show lasted, Shawn stayed busy with other acting engagements too, appearing in such films and TV series as “Dexter” (2010), “Hawaii Five-0” (2011), and “Body of Proof” (2013). Soon after the end of the “The Southland”, Shawn found a new television engagement, as he ended up being selected for the role of Terry McCandless in the TV drama series “Reckless” (2014).

In recent years, Shawn appeared in the film “For Justice” (2015), and played Andrew ‘Pope’ Cody in the first ten episodes of the TV crime-drama series “Animal Kingdom” (2016).

Regarding his personal life, Shawn has been married to Kelly Alanese since 2010; the couple has two sons together. Shawn’s current residence is Los Angeles. In his free time, he plays tennis and is also a guitar player.
