Shawn Machel Johnson was born on the 19th January 1992, in Des Mones, Iowa USA, and is a retired artistic gymnast, dancer and TV personality, probably best known to the world for winning a gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in the balance beam discipline, among many other achievements. She also came to prominence for winning the eighth season of the popularTV dance competition show “Dancing with the Stars”, with Mark Ballas.

Born to Dough and Teri Johnson, Shawn started attending gymnastic training when she was only three years old, when her parents noticed her energetic behavior around the house without raising a sweat. Three years later she became one of the first students to join Liang Chow’s gymnastics school in her hometown.

She enrolled at Valley High School but didn’t matriculate since her career was already at a high level, but while in school she liked dancing and also attended football games. She left school in 2009 and finished her higher education with a private tutor in Los Angeles, where she had settled once her major career started.

It was in 2004 that Shawn experienced her first competitive events, including the Junior Olympics (U.S. Level 10) National Championships, where she was first on beam, second on the floor, and fourth in all-around disciplines, after which her coach Chow contacted the national team staff, and she was brought into their training camps. She wasn’t successful in Junior Elite in her first year, but in 2006, she was the Junior National All-Around Champion, compiling a score that was higher than all of the scores recorded by senior elite competitors.

Shawn became a senior in 2007 and debuted at the 2007 Tyson American Cup, where she won the all-around discipline. The same year, Shawn competed in the Pan American Games, where she won gold medals in all-around, uneven bars and balance beam disciplines, and with the team as well. In the US Championships the same year, she took three gold medals and one-third place, which only increased her net worth. Shawn competed also in World Championships in 2007, where she was the winner of three gold medals and also finished at eighth place after a poor performance in the balance beam discipline.

Shawn is also known for her philanthropic activities; teaming up with Ashton Kutcher, who is an Iowa native, to co-host events to raise funds needed to repair objects damaged by flooding. Furthermore, she is also a part of the “Exercise Your Character” program.
