Born to Dough and Teri Johnson, Shawn started attending gymnastic training when she was only three years old, when her parents noticed her energetic behavior around the house without raising a sweat. Three years later she became one of the first students to join Liang Chow’s gymnastics school in her hometown.
She enrolled at Valley High School but didn’t matriculate since her career was already at a high level, but while in school she liked dancing and also attended football games. She left school in 2009 and finished her higher education with a private tutor in Los Angeles, where she had settled once her major career started.
It was in 2004 that Shawn experienced her first competitive events, including the Junior Olympics (U.S. Level 10) National Championships, where she was first on beam, second on the floor, and fourth in all-around disciplines, after which her coach Chow contacted the national team staff, and she was brought into their training camps. She wasn’t successful in Junior Elite in her first year, but in 2006, she was the Junior National All-Around Champion, compiling a score that was higher than all of the scores recorded by senior elite competitors.
Shawn became a senior in 2007 and debuted at the 2007 Tyson American Cup, where she won the all-around discipline. The same year, Shawn competed in the Pan American Games, where she won gold medals in all-around, uneven bars and balance beam disciplines, and with the team as well. In the US Championships the same year, she took three gold medals and one-third place, which only increased her net worth. Shawn competed also in World Championships in 2007, where she was the winner of three gold medals and also finished at eighth place after a poor performance in the balance beam discipline.
However she reached her full potential in 2008 at the Olympic Games; Shawn won the balance beam discipline, and was second in three other disciplines including floor exercise, all around and with her team.
In 2010, Shawn tore her left ACL and had to undergo a reconstructive knee surgery, and despite attempting a comeback, had consistent problems with her knee, and in 2012 decided to retire from professional gymnastics.
Nevertheless, she has since pursued other goals and has appeared on television, written a book, and had several other accomplishments. She had already won the TV show “Dancing with the Stars” in 2009 with Mark Ballas, and appeared once again in the show, this time teaming up with Derek Hough. The two were runner-ups.
Her first book came out in 2008, entitled “Shawn Johnson: Olympic Champion: Stories Behind the Smile”, the sales of which only increased her net worth. Four years later she published her second creation “Winning Balance: What I’ve Learned So Far about Love, Faith, and Living Your Dreams”, and in 2016, she published her first fiction book “The Flip Side”, which also added to her net worth.
Thanks to her successful career as a gymnast, Shawn won numerous prestigious honors, and awards, including the ESPY for “Best Female U.S. Olympian”, AAU James E. Sullivan Award, and 2008 Teen Choice Award for best female athlete, among many others.
Regarding her personal life, Shawn has been married to Andrew East since April 2016. She was pregnant during 2017 but unfortunately, she suffered a miscarriage.
Shawn was a victim of a stalker in 2009 when 34-year old Robert O’Ryan was arrested after jumping a fence and sneaking onto the CBS lot. Shawn was only 17 at the time, and Robert, on who was found duct tape, guns and love letters to young Shawn, was sentenced to five years at Patton State Hospital.
Shawn is also known for her philanthropic activities; teaming up with Ashton Kutcher, who is an Iowa native, to co-host events to raise funds needed to repair objects damaged by flooding. Furthermore, she is also a part of the “Exercise Your Character” program.
