Sheryl was raised by her mother Louise Swoopes; growing up with three older brothers who picked up basketball at a young age, and before long Sheryl started playing with them. At the age of seven, she started playing in the league called Little Dribblers, a local league for children.
She went to Brownfield High School, where she continued playing basketball, and then enrolled the University of Texas, but left without a played game, and attended South Plains College, where she stayed for the next two years. Her senior year, Sheryl spent at Texas Tech, and won the NCAA women’s basketball championship with the team.
