She is best known for being a member of the music group The Shirelles, from its inception in 1957 all the way to 1975, when she embarked on a solo career. She has been an active member of the entertainment industry since 1957.

They released their first single “I Met Him On A Sunday” in 1959 which became a local hit. Since Florence was still their manager, she signed them with her new record label “Scepter Records”. Furthermore, a street in their home town, Passaic, was named after the group, The Shirelles Boulevard.
