Van Gundy grew up surrounded by basketball, with his father being a basketball coach, Bill Van Gundy, who coached at Brockport State University in New York, and his brother, Jeff Van Gundy, being an NBA coach. He attended Alhambra High School in Martinez, California, and then enrolled at Brockport, playing for his father. He graduated in 1981, obtaining his BA in English and a BS in Physical Education.

Later that year Van Gundy began his coaching career at the University of Vermont, serving as an assistant coach until 1983. He then became the head coach at Castleton State College, holding the position until 1986, and going on to serve one year as an assistant coach at Canisius College and one as an assistant coach at Fordham University. From 1988 to 1992 he was the head coach at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and then served as assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin from 1992 to 1994, and as the head coach from 1994 to 1995. Over the course of his college coaching career, Van Gundy compiled a record of 135-92, achieving a great deal of recognition, and earning a considerable net worth.

In 1995 Van Gundy was hired as an assistant coach to Pat Riley for the Miami Heat in the NBA, and when Riley resigned in 2003, Van Gundy became the team’s head coach. He went on to lead the Heat to a 42-40 record, and then to an Eastern Conference-best 12-3 record late in the season, finishing second in the Atlantic Division. The team defeated the New Orleans during the 2004 NBA Playoffs, but eventually lost to Indiana in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. After the arrival of All-Star center Shaquille O’Neal, the team compiled a 59-23 record, the best in the conference, and Van Gaudy became the first Heat coach to coach in the All-Star Game, leading the East to a victory.

During the 2005 NBA playoffs, his team reached the Eastern Conference Finals, being defeated by the Detroit Pistons, and Van Gundy resigned from his position as head coach later in 2005, for personal reasons; ironically, the Heat, now led by Riley, went on to capture their first championship that season. During his tenure with the Heat, Van Gaudy had a regular season record of 112-73 and a postseason mark of 17-11, which greatly contributed to his reputation and to his wealth as well.

In 2007 he became the head coach of the Orlando Magic, leading the team to a 52-30 record and the Southeast Division championship in his first season. The team made it to the Eastern Semifinals, being defeated by the Detroit Pistons. In the following season Van Gaudy led the Magic to a 59-23 record, capturing their second Southeast Division title, and by defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, they reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 1995, but lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. The season 2009-2010 saw Van Gundy being named the coach of the Eastern Conference All-Star team for the second time in his career, leading the East to a victory again. The team took their third consecutive Southeast Division title.

During his tenure as the Magic’s head coach, Van Gundy compiled a 222-106 regular season record, leading the team to the playoffs in each of his five seasons, which reinforced his coaching skills and his popularity in the world of football, and significantly improved his fortune.

As of 2014, Van Gundy has served as the head coach and president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons, further improving his net worth. In 2016 he led the team to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2009.
