To begin with, Paul Van became interested in music in his early childhood. He studied at the music Academy of Jette, in which he studied music generally and learned to play the drums.
In 2001, he became a rapper under the name of Opmaestro, although later he changed his name to Stromae. At age of 18, he founded the rap group Suspicioun, together with the rapper JEDI. They made and produced the song and the music video “Faut que le t’arrête Rap…”. Later, JEDI decided to pursue solo career and the duo separated. Stromae enrolled at the Institut National de Cinématographie et Radioélectricité after his first single “Juste un cerveau, un flow, un fond et un mic…” (2007) was released. While studying at the film school in Brussels Stromae decided to focus on his music career, so
In 2008, he composed several tracks for the album “A l’Ombre du Showbusiness the French Antilles” by the rapper Kery James. Stromae also served as a producer of the single “Cette Fois” by Anggun – the song made it up to fourth place on the French charts. Stromae also made contributions to other songs by Melissa and Anggun, before being recognition with his second single “Alors on danse” topping the charts in more than ten European countries – Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and in his home country of Belgium; the single has been certified multi-platinum in many of the above mentioned countries. The same year Stromae released his first studio album “Cheese” (2010) which topped the charts in Belgium as well as receiving three times platinum certification for sales.
At the end of 2010, it has been announced that Stromae had earned six nominations for MIA’s in 2010. He became the winner of the MIA for the Hit of the Year and the Best Breakthrough. In 2011, Stromae won the European Border Breakers Award, a prize that is given annually to ten promising young European artists of the year who successfully debuted outside their own borders. In 2013, he released his second album “Racine carrée”; the album includes the four singles: “Papaoutai”, “Formidable”, “Tous les memes” and “Ta fête”. In France, he sold more than a million copies and received three prizes from “Victoire de la musique” (French version of the Grammys), and the album was certified twelve times platinum. Stromae earned five nominations and eventually won four awards at the MIA in 2014.
In 2014, he launched his own clothing brand Mosaert, the results of which are yet to be determined.
